.ME hits over one million domain name registrations and the number of users of the fast growing domain at the global arena is increasing daily.
Οn February 15, 2016, the total number of domains registered with Montenegro's extension amounted to 1.014.867, while the annual growth in 2015 was 28.36 percent, with over 169M indexed pages on Google.
The .me extension was assigned to Montenegro as a country code after it became an independent nation in June 2006. However, the Montenegro government decided .me would be operated as a generic name after considering the potential worldwide appeal for the extension.
Ιnitially, as soon as the .ME domain extension was launched, there were only 22 commercial, generic top-level domains (gTLD) in the global market.
"At the moment, the global domain market is perfectly competitive, because from October 23, 2013 to February 11, 2016 a total of 910 new generic domains in accordance with ICANN's new gTLD program was launched. An additional 490 new generic domains will be released, but in spite of fierce competition in the global market, our national domain .ME is recording rapid growth in the number of registrations and is already occupying an enviable position", stated the Ministry of information society and telecommunications.
.Me domain name is considered one of the most fortunate of all in the name game and as the Ministry added, valorization of this virtual product earned Montenegro about 20 million euros in the period from February 2008 to December 2015.
